More About Every Body:

As the movie points out, there are many variations of intersex people. Some are born with abnormal chromosome numbers or sex characteristics and are not unambiguously male or female; others are born with malformed or damaged genitalia due to genetics or other factors (including doctor’s errors, a scenario discussed in “Every Body”); others may have ambiguous genitals or undeveloped testicles that are first thought of as ovaries; and others may appear to be male on the surface but have female reproductive organs or the opposite.

These individuals are typically assigned a sex at birth that doesn’t accurately reflect who they really are in terms of their body parts and places the burden of fulfilling the assigned role on them for the remainder of their lives, regardless of what they personally want.
