More About Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2:

In 1980, Ego courted Meredith Quill, who presented her with a seedling planted by him in a wooded area of Missouri. After two months of battle against the Accuser, the Guardians were declared heroes of the galaxy. They accepted a mission from Ayesha, the leader of the sovereigns, to protect valuable batteries from Abilisk.

In exchange, Nebula, who had been captured by the Sovereign after the Battle of the Xandar, was given to them. Following the destruction of Abilisk by Rocket, the Sovereign’s vessel, the Milan, was attacked by an Omnicraft fleet. Milan was heavily damaged and was forced to land on a planet. However, the Sovereign fleet was destroyed by the single act of Ego, revealing himself to be the father of Peter Quill.
