More About Human Resources Season 1:
Whether deliberately or not, Netflix’s new Big Mouth spinoff, Human Resources, feels like it’s trying to do the opposite. The first ten episodes quickly introduce dozens of characters (both monsters and humans), but there’s no clear sense of where the show’s focus or heart lies. As a result, it’s a show that’s pretty consistently funny, if you enjoy the deranged stuff Big Mouth gets up to, but not consistently engaging on the emotional level that makes Big Mouth so great.
Building on the mythology of the original Big Mouth series, Human Resources brings us into the offices where a variety of creatures are tasked with handling the emotions of human clientele. The show’s ABC plots work best when they show how the monsters interact with humans, often bickering over the best interests of their clients. At their worst, the show resorts to office sitcom-style scenarios, such as Pete the Logic Rock falling in love with the love bug Rochelle (played by Keke Palmer) or the hormone monsters having to undergo empathy training after an excessive number of coworkers complain about their gross behavior.
