I’m always amazed at how Resident Evil keeps popping up in our lives. It’s one of my favorite games from when I was a kid, a cheesy zombie shooter, that is still out there and getting more and more popular every year. There’s a Resident Evil game, movie, or TV show every year, and while some of them don’t do as well as others, like the Netflix adaptation, the fear of over-saturation hasn’t stopped Capcom from continuing to make Resident Evil games and movies. There’s another live-action movie coming out soon, and the fourth classic Resident Evil animated movie is out today.

While animated films do not have a significant influence on video games themselves, they are intrinsically linked to them and reflect significant events and narratives. A prime example of this is Jill Valentine, whose trauma stems from Wesker’s brainwashing of her in the fifth game. Writer Makoto Fukami (returning from Vendetta) ties Jill’s personal story to the main narrative in a way that does not feel forced. Indeed, Jill’s trauma can be likened to that of one of the film’s antagonists, who has done horrendous things while under their control.
