More About Rocket Science:
Hal Hefner, the high school hero of “Rocket Science,” stutters. But all high school students stutter. It’s just that most don’t do it with their voice. They stutter because they don’t know how to talk. Or what to say next. Or how to talk out of embarrassment. Or how to approach someone they’re in love with. Or how to act in class when everyone is watching. Hal Hefner stutters because he doesn’t know what to say out loud.
Arguably, Rocket Science concentrates on the wrong person. We’re given enough insight into Ginny’s character to understand that she’s fascinating and magnetic: a whip-smart, angel-looking young woman who’s willing to use her charm to achieve her goals. She’s much more engaging than Hal, a character we’ve seen in countless feel-good movies. It’s a shame that a film about Ginny might be fresh and different, while the film about Hal is nothing more than diversionary. Hal doesn’t hold our interest the way he does with Ginny; it’s no wonder the movie works best when she’s on screen, and the longer she’s absent, the more it loses momentum. This isn’t a knock on the actor’s ability; in fact, it’s the character’s fault, not Hal’s. Thompson can do a great job of playing Hal’s awkwardness, but he can’t do a great job playing against his character.
