More About Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken:

Meet the Gillmans is a fantasy animated film about a sixteen-year-old girl, Ruby Gillman, who struggles to fit into her high school environment. After her mother, played by T.J. Collette, tells her to go to the ocean with her friends, Ruby finds out that she is descended from a long line of Kraken warriors who have guarded the land and ocean against mermaids, and that she is also a rightful heir to the throne due to her grandmother, played by Jane Fonda.

The film was originally titled Meet the Gills but was changed to its current title in June 2021, with casting for the role of Ruby Gillman taking place in June 2022. The film is expected to be released in 2022.

The surprises keep coming. Not only does Ruby turn out to be a giant Kraken, but she also finds out that she’s got a Kraken grandma, grandma Kraken grandma (played by Jane Fonda, who looks like she’s having a blast). Grandma Kraken is a warlike queen of the sea and a peacemaker. And the biggest threat to peace in the ocean is mermaids, who are seen as the bad guys of the sea. It’s a cool twist on the classic story of mermaids, and one that might be a bit of a dig at the siren story of Disney’s new live-action movie adaptation of the classic story The Little Mermaid.
