Young Sherlock Holmes was my favorite film (and still is) when I was a child. The young detective didn’t grow up looking for family jewels, he grew up looking for cults and the devil-worshipping. I suspect the writers of the new Holmes might have done the same thing. Which isn’t a bad thing. Most of the early Holmes stories wouldn’t have made it to the big screen (the only exception being another supernatural story, The Hound Of The Baskerville).

Sherlock Holmes by Guy Ritchie is a film that is devoid of charm and form. It is filled with pointless action sequences, dull dialogue, and a plot that has been cobbled together by a group of writers who have seen too many versions of the classic Arthur Conan Doyle story. There is no harm in reimagining the detective for the modern era, but why settle for such a chaotic mess? Ritchie’s earlier films, such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch, were bracing, cocky, and enjoyable gangster stories.

However, none of that energy is present in this film, which is heavily reliant on a computer-generated London, dim cinematography, and a criminal amount of fast-cut editing which eliminates all but a few of the action scenes (of which there are many). Robert Downey Jr.’s performance as the brilliant, disaffected, and prickly detective could have been more than adequate. However, it is difficult to make oneself heard when the film is so noisy.
