More About Smile:

By the time the horror histories are being written, the 2010s will be linked to trauma metaphors in the same way the 1980s were linked to slasher movies, and while it comes at the end of a decade, “Smile,” Paramount’s new wide-release, PTSD-fueled horror, fits right into the mold. The only difference is the monster isn’t much of a metaphor. The demon, evil spirit, whatever it is (the movie is a bit vague on this one) feeds on trauma and is transmitted by it.

More specifically, the something that drags along Dr. Rosie Cotter, played by Sosie Bacon, loves the taste of those who have witnessed another person’s death by suicide—a grisly, painful, and blood-soaked suicide, with garden shears, oncoming trains, and the broken shards of a ceramics vase in the hospital intake room.
