More About Sort Of Season 1:
focuses on a gender-fluid millennial who wears many hats, revealing the identities and categories that are outdated. Sabi Mehboob, a transgender millennial, juggles a variety of personas, including beautiful bartender at an LGBTQ club, youngest child in a huge Pakistani family, and de facto parent of a downtown hipster family.
In CBC and HBO Max’s Sort Of, Bilal Baig’s gender-fluid heroine Sabi offers a fantastic performance. They have long, jagged locks, a passion for bangles, crop tops, and sparkly objects, and Sabi uses they/them pronouns.
As a bartender and nanny to two half-Asian, half-white children, Sabi works two jobs (very Toronto). In the pilot, the family they work for, or more specifically, the man of the house, Paul (Gray Powell, who resembles a glum Duplass brother), has chosen to fire Sabi. He offers to assist them in locating a new family, noting how challenging it could be “for someone like you.” He tries to correct the remark, but Sabi interrupts him. “It is what it is.”
