The first season of “With Love” on Amazon Prime did justice to the idea of a “perfect romance” with its “unconventional portrayals” and “fight for love” but the second season degenerated into a “generic family drama” with none of the charm or depth of the first season. In the first season, “Santiago” (an introverted guy) and “Lily” (a bubbly, high-achieving girl) formed a perfect match. They went through a lot of ups and downs in their relationship but their love never wavered. But as the season progressed, they started to realize how much they were different.
Ms. Kellett, who is best known for her role as the Executive Producer and Showrunner of the highly acclaimed “One Day At a Time” reboot, expressed her fondness for romantic comedies. However, she observed that in many television and film productions, “all the brown people disappear when the holidays come around, and I thought, ‘Oh, wait, let’s fix that.’ The aim was to create something that appeals to everyone, not just romantic-comedy fans.”
